Moving to a new city is an exciting adventure filled with new opportunities and experiences. However, finding reliable healthcare can be a significant concern amid all the excitement. At PartnerMD, we understand the importance of maintaining continuous, quality healthcare during such transitions.

Since 2003, we’ve talked to numerous individuals and families in the midst of finding new healthcare when relocation. From those conversations, we've learned a thing or two about what’s important during this chaotic time.

We’re here to share some essential considerations to help you settle into your new city with peace of mind.

Whether you're moving across the country or just a few hours away, this guide will help make healthcare one less thing to worry about during your move.

1. Research local healthcare options before moving to a new city

Before you settle into your new city, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the local healthcare landscape.

Start with hospitals and primary care providers

Begin your research by looking into the hospitals, clinics, and primary care providers available in your new area. Understanding your local healthcare options will help you make informed decisions about your healthcare needs, ensuring that you and your family have access to reliable care.

Check your health insurance

To avoid unexpected out-of-pocket expenses, make sure that the healthcare providers in your new city accept your current insurance plan. Many people overlook this step and end up facing unexpected costs, so it's best to confirm this information ahead of time.

2. Address your personal and family healthcare needs in a new city

Once you’ve gotten a lay of the healthcare land, the next step is to address your personal and family healthcare needs.

Prioritize finding a new primary care physician

A primary care physician (PCP) is essential for maintaining your overall health. They will help manage chronic conditions, prescribe medications, and provide preventive care. Finding a new PCP should be one of your top priorities when settling into your new city to ensure continuity of care.

Don’t forget about specialist care

If you or a family member require specialist care (e.g., cardiologists, dermatologists, or other medical professionals), take the time to research specialists in the area. Continuity of treatment is crucial for managing specific health conditions, so it’s important to have your list of preferred specialists ready before you need them.

3. Explore your healthcare options

If you’re looking for a more personalized approach to healthcare as you settle into your new city, here are four different models that can be helpful for you and your family.

  • Traditional primary care: This is the standard model of care, typically covered by insurance. Patients book appointments when needed, though access may be limited due to high patient volumes and shorter visits.

  • Direct primary care: Similar to concierge medicine but with lower membership fees and no insurance billing. It offers longer appointments and direct access to a physician but lacks the extra wellness services of concierge care.

  • Urgent care: You can use urgent care for your primary care. They typically open longer than a standard primary care practice, which could make them a little more convenient. However, it can be difficult to establish a long-term relationship with a doctor. It can also be more expensive than a typical traditional primary care clinic.

  • Concierge medicine: Concierge medicine offers patients immediate, personalized care, which can be especially valuable during the stressful process of moving to a new place. With concierge medicine, you gain access to longer appointments, 24/7 communication with your physician, and a dedicated healthcare team that’s focused on your wellness.

4. Be prepared for emergencies

Emergencies can happen at any time, especially when you’re in the midst of a move. Being prepared will help you respond quickly and effectively should an unexpected health issue arise.

Locate emergency rooms and urgent care centers

Familiarize yourself with the nearest emergency rooms and urgent care facilities. This step ensures that in the event of an emergency, you know exactly where to go, saving you precious time in a stressful situation.

Keep your medical records accessible

Make sure to have your medical records on hand, either physically or digitally. This allows you to quickly provide accurate information to new healthcare providers, whether for ongoing care or in case of an emergency.

Take the next steps: Choose the best option for you in your new city

Moving to a new city comes with many challenges, but healthcare shouldn’t be one of them. By researching local healthcare options, addressing your personal healthcare needs, being prepared for emergencies, and considering concierge medicine for a more personalized approach, you can settle into your new city with confidence.

If you're not satisfied with the primary care experience you've had, then a new move can be a great time for a fresh start and a new model. Concierge medicine can be that solution - personalized care, longer appointments, same-day or next-day appointments, 24/7 access to physicians, and more.
